“Suika-to-Me!” by VanEats.ca

Suika, located at 1626 West Broadway in Vancouver, is one of my favourite Japanese izakayas in town. When local restaurant promotion company VanEats asked me to preview their new “Suika-to-Me” four-course meal deal, I had to say yes! I mean, $18 for an exclusive four-course dining pass at a quality restaurant such as Suika is a dream. “Suika-to-Me” runs February 15 to March 31, 2012.

The meal includes:

Salmon Carpaccio, served on a bed of homemade sesame dressing, wasabi mayo, and topped with scallions and yuzu zest.

AAA Beef Filet Steak, served on a hot stone plate with fresh garlic, soy onion sauce and a side of potato wedges sprinkled with shichimi spices.

Tokyo Oxtail Ramen, slowly braised oxtail and noodles in soy broth topped with dried fish powder & scallions.

Pumpkin Crème Brulee, topped with whipped cream and strawberries.

Salmon Carpaccio
The Salmon Carpaccio was sliced and seasoned to perfection. Each bite melted in my mouth, and I enjoyed the extra bite the scallions provided the dish. It’s also pretty to look at!

Steak and Potato Wedges
I love steak and fries, and Suika’s version of ‘steak frites’ was no exception. I’ve had the potato wedge fries before and love the spices sprinkled on top. It gives it extra flavour. The dipping sauce is better than ketchup (yes, it was). What I loved best about this dish is the hot stone plate. It kept the steak and wedges warm throughout the whole meal. The only thing I would recommend is to ask for a more raw doneness on the steak, as it continues to cook while being on the plate.

oxtail ramen
What can I say about Suika’s oxtail ramen? It’s comfort food at its best. The oxtail is tender, the broth tasty (but not overly salty), and the noodles cooked to a good chewiness. It’s one of my favourites for sure. I can eat a big bowl of this myself!

pumpkin creme brulee
Dessert featured the Pumpkin Crème Brulee. This one is done in a more traditional way than its popular frozen Matcha brulee. The pumpkin taste is subtle but delicious. The pumpkin gives it a bit of texture. I would say that if you don’t usually like pumpkin, you should be able to enjoy this dish still. The whipped cream and strawberries are a nice addition.

All-in-all, the $18 “Suika-to-Me” promotion by VanEats is a great deal. What are you waiting for? Call Suika to book now!
